It’s time: My Thoughts on Gay Marriage.
“If marriage is radically redefined as being just a way of affirming private feelings of loving attraction, than equality will require allowing people who loves dogs to marry dogs and people who love ice cream to marry ice cream,”
- Dr. Daniel Heimbach of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
It has been said plenty of times, but now is the time for it to actually start meaning something. Obama’s recent support for gay marriage marks the beginning of a new era- in which an African-American President with a wife and two children can openly support same-sex marriage. A time in which nation-states around the globe can shimmy themselves into international recognition for supporting the basic notion of two adults getting married and raising children because they want to make a lifelong commitment to each other.
I am the youngest and only girl in my family; my two older brothers are in committed, heterosexual relationships, as am I. Yet my mother, after 25 years of raising three children and being in a loving relationship with my incredible father, was not in love. My mum is gay, and has been with her partner for 5 years- the same amount of time I have been with my boyfriend. I could get married tomorrow, but my Mother faces legal discrimination because she has chosen someone of the same-sex to fall in love with.
The problem with legislation that doesn’t recognise same-sex marriage is the utter stupidity it claims to protect. Politicians speak of gay and lesbian relationships as though it is something you can choose, as though you might be able to somehow get over in a few years.Legalising gay marriage does not mean we are redefining the basic principles of marriage itself, rather, it’s allowing the concept of marriage to adapt to the radical change which has occurred in our society.
The very concept of fighting for the allowance of the LGBT community to marry is not to proclaim your love through a contract, it is about acceptance. Legalising gay marriage will mark the turning point for our generation. One day when I have children, I want to be able to say, “You know years ago it used to be illegal for boys to marry boys and girls to marry girls” and they’re going to look at me and say “Really, Mum? Why?”
Equality should not be a privilege, it should be a right. It is time for the world to stand up for my Mum, for my best friend, for my bank manager. This is not a small fight, this is the beginning of the global community supporting the notion that gay marriage doesn’t affect anyone but the people getting married. There should be no such thing as ‘gay marriage’ it should just be ‘marriage’. Love should not be criticised for who you choose to devote yourself to, and love should not be labelled, so if you want to marry your dog or your ice cream, I really don’t mind.

The Great Houses - House Targaryen
The Targaryens are the blood of the dragon, descended from the high lords of the ancient Freehold of Valyria, their heritage proclaimed in a striking (some say inhuman) beauty, with lilac or indigo or violet eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum white. Aegon the Dragon’s ancestors escaped the Doom of Valyria and the chaos and slaughter that followed to settle on Dragonstone, a rocky island in the narrow sea. It was from there that Aegon and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys sailed to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. To preserve the blood royal and keep it pure, House Targaryen has often followed the Valyrian custom of wedding brother to sister. Aegon himself took both his sisters to wife, and fathered sons on each. The Targaryen banner is a three-headed dragon, red on black, the three heads representing Aegon and his sisters. The Targaryen words are “Fire and Blood”.
